He elected to take early retirement after 36 years of public education in order to devote full-time to his carving career. Trained under some of the top figure carvers in the United States, Gerald was awarded GOLD MEDAL status for his figure carvings in the Scandinavian Tradition in 1995. Making him the tenth carver in the nation to receive this award. It is the highest award given to carvers by the Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum (located in Decorah, Iowa), for Scandinavian style carvings in the United States. He has won numerous blue ribbons as well as Best-of-Show at the local, state, national and international levels of competition. Gerald has a vast amount of teaching experience, conducting figure carving seminars throughout the Mid West as well as his own “Whittle Shop Studio.” He is currently on the teaching staff at the Vesterheim handwork School & Academy, the Norskedalen/Skumsrud Heritage Farm Classes in Coon Valley, Wisconsin, and Waldorf Woodcarving School in Forest City, Iowa.
